Spider flinched when the car doors slammed.  The three of them watched Toole and Harper drive away.  Spider retreated to the garden, picked a suitable spot and stretched out on the cool soil.
    “What do you make of those two?” Stuart said.  “Wouldn’t a real cop tell us not to interfere at all?”
    Ferguson gave him a sobering look.  “Trust me--they’re real cops.”


                              

 

 

 

 Stuart is on the verge of completing his eight-week course in criminal justice.  A lady offers him a small fortune to leave school early and find her missing daughter.  To collect, he must take along Ferguson, a next-door neighbor he can't stand.
